ModMonk: Choosing Ease

April 3, 2015

Meditating-MonkI love this recent visual from the MindValley Academy Blog that came across my email box today (read their post on The Modern Meditation Advantage).

My initial reaction was a laugh and I pictured the many characters at the Silent Frisco events I have attended (dancing is so freeing). Then I thought, cool – I like it! This is fun and a concept I believe people desire to activate.

It got me thinking about my own state of deep bliss; what that means for me and where does it fit into my busy lifestyle. Some of the images that popped into my head included: me dancing Nia, long walks in the woods, my 21-day meditation practice with Deepak Chopra and Oprah Winfrey and having coffee with friends. These are personal actions that deliver present and blissful states for me.

Once the obvious connections faded away, an inquiry surfaced. When I am not striving (AKA taking action) toward bliss (during my very busy, modern lifestyle), what else get’s in the way? My answer: my chattering mind combined with ‘over action’.

I have found that quieting my mind is the most helpful key and often times the most difficult. It’s a skill that lets go of the need to control and direct. It’s a way of being that allows for the moment. Unfortunately, in this moment, I often default to think, judge, compare, move, direct, strive (on steroids).

This uber-striving that takes me from just ‘being with myself and others’ to over exerting has left me exhausted and disappointed with the results. Don’t get me wrong, I am definitely in favor of taking action toward my desires (dance, nature, spiritual contemplation, connection) but I am learning that within the action there is a time to just be present (sans expectation). When I choose to shift my thoughts to being with ‘what is’ without judgement or need to change, my body, mind and spirit can relax. Relaxation moves me out of ‘force’ mode and opens me to a new creative possibility.

What is your way of being in bliss during your modern lifestyle? How is your mind behaving? What happens to your body? What would be different if you were really being a Mod-Monk? Please share your thoughts.
